About James Philpott - Artist's statement

My work is an ongoing exploration of place, memory, and the shifting boundaries between the internal and external world. Raised in South Armagh, Ireland, and now living in coastal Brittany, I draw inspiration from the maritime landscapes that have shaped my life. Trained in architecture, I approach painting with an awareness of structure, space, and the emotional resonance of form.

I work primarily in acrylics, oils, and watercolour, often moving between abstraction and representation. The themes that recur in my work—coastlines, harbours, lighthouses, solitary figures—reflect a fascination with solitude, transition, and the enduring presence of the sea. Each piece is an attempt to capture not only a place but a moment—fleeting, layered, and quietly expressive.

Mon travail explore les notions de lieu, de mémoire et les frontières mouvantes entre le monde intérieur et extérieur. Originaire d’Irlande du Nord et vivant aujourd’hui sur la côte bretonne, je puise mon inspiration dans les paysages maritimes qui ont marqué ma vie.

Formé à l’architecture, j’aborde la peinture avec une sensibilité particulière à l’espace, à la structure, et à la résonance émotionnelle des formes. J’utilise principalement l’acrylique, l’huile et l’aquarelle, en naviguant entre abstraction et figuration.

Mes sujets récurrents—côtes sauvages, phares, ports, figures isolées—sont autant de métaphores d’un monde en transition, où la mer devient à la fois décor, témoin et miroir. Chaque œuvre est une tentative de saisir l’instant : fugace, stratifié, silencieusement expressif.
